EUPHORIA (Season 1 – Episode 3)

In a short period of time, Rue and Jules have become the best of friends. Rue put herself in danger while at Fezco’s house because around the time she stopped by, Fezco’s dangerous supplier Mouse stopped by to collect his payment and hand over a new supply for Fezco to sell. All the while drugging Rue and almost raping her. Maddy gets back together with Nate after their bowling date. Mckay and Cassie are still trying to navigate their love life. Towards the end of the last episode, Cassie sends Mckay nude pictures of herself. Despite early on being annoyed that she makes everything sexual. Kat becomes an adult cam star for Pornhub after loving the comments on the reposted video from Mckay’s party and she meets a guy named Ethan. ShyGuy118, the guy that Jules has been talking to online isn’t a guy named Tyler but our…beloved Nate.

We are first given a glimpse at a sleeping Rue and Jules with appropriate lullaby music playing in the background. In her voiceover, Rue then gives us a glimpse into Kat’s past. When she was 11, her folks and her went on a family vacation to Sandals, Jamaica. Not many would openly admit it but some people hated going into the ocean. Kat included especially getting a jellyfish stuck to her leg. But while in Jamaica, she loved virgin pina coladas. Way before the trip, Kat had a decently good life, it was average and not in the terms of her hating the world. She was well liked among her classmates. She was also a very smart girl too. The only thing that really mattered to her was a sweet boy named Daniel. He was the perfect boy in Kat’s eyes besides his looks. He was a nice boy. The decent kind that would text her every night before going to bed and say “sweet dreams”. Every morning before the bell rang, he would hold her hand and walk with her as they headed to class. Kat never really understood why Daniel wanted to be with her but in the end, in her heart she felt good about it. Now back to the family trip. During the 8 day stay in Jamaica, Kat had consumed 72 virgin pina coladas. After that she returned home and everything was supposed to go back to normal. But this is Euphoria and there is always a side effect to human’s happiness. When Kat first left for Jamaica, she was 107 pounds. After going on the scale, she weighed at a whopping 127. From that point on, she could barely fit into her clothes regardless of being 5’2″. Her body wasn’t prepared to hold onto the newly added 20 pounds. The new look was noticeable and Kat tried her very best to hide it; being reminded that she would see Daniel the very next day at school through text. Seeing him at school, Daniel didn’t make a big deal about Kat’s new closed off look. The reason why Kat loved Daniel was due to the fact that he didn’t care about other people’s opinions. Who he loves is no one’s business but his own. Nothing was going to change about him and her. That is until 4th period hit. Kat received a note in class. There was a note claiming at first to be written by Daniel; which said that he was breaking up with Kat. But as revealed by Rue’s voiceover, a popular girl by the name of Kendra Sutherland wrote the note. Apparently speaking on Daniel’s behalf. You know what? F off to the both of them.

Whatever. Fuck her. Fuck him. She didn’t actually love Daniel. She was 11. And when you’re 11, you fall in love with, like, everyone and everything. It’s not real love. Real love is when you can’t exist without someone, when you’d rather die than be apart, and the whole world goes dark, and nothing else matters but the person standing in front of you.

Guys from TV & Movies were Kat’s favorite thing to love. Those were real men to her. The love they were experiencing was real love. Men who would stay in her life. Guys who would never disappoint her and break her heart. Their love would spark, ignite and inspire. Fast forward, the summer before she began high school, she started writing fan fiction. By the end of the year, she had become one of the many prolific smut writers on Tumblr. AU crossovers and porn ratings of NC-17 filled her Tumblr page from top to bottom. All of them were all cool and dandy but what set her up for Internet fame was her story “The First Night”. A Larry Stylinson story made up of the pairing of Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. A conspiracy theory that was alive and well during the group’s active run as a…well group. This takes place after their run on X Factor; around the beginning of the ‘Take Me Home’ tour.

What happens after that is I gotta be honest, it made me chuckle a little. During my early days as a multi-fandom girl, I would just be reading these fan-fictions that were either about the celebrity and who they were dating, secretly involved with, or it would be a story where the reader, him or herself would be able to insert themselves to. Of course as I got older, before I started watching porn on pornhub, my mind would immediately dig for stories similar to Larry. I mean not same sex stories like this because theories can get out of hand but I would just find myself reading NC-17 imagine stories. Yet, that’s my personal take and preference as a multi-fandom girl. Now back to the show…

This purple, blue vortex appears carrying the story based group mates into the sky, for a second of 69ing. An anime Kat looks on as her creation blossoms into this star constellation of the cover art for the story. As she continues to look up into the sky the scene slowly switches from anime style to the real world as Kat is seated at the bleachers near the football field. It seems she is in the middle of gym class as one tacky classmate says that Kat doesn’t even suffer from asthma. She’s just overweight and doesn’t wanna exercise. Making even more tacky classmates laugh at that outdated joke. After 72 hours of publishing the Larry Stylinson story, she gained 184,265 notifications in the form of repostings. A mere three weeks later, she had gained 53,000 new followers. When I used my tumblr page (it’s still up, BigtimeAallyhia), I didn’t post much except collages from my instagram page and fandom stories. It’s been awhile since I used that page. So as it turns out, Kat had gained a huge amount of popularity. At least, online of course. Her online life is very separate from her real life. No one knew that she was famous. She was mostly picked on at school due to her appearance. Real life at that point of growing up just became super depressing for her. Being the outcast at an otherwise ever changing atmosphere that was her school. Every now and then she would make up this fantasy about telling her followers how high she disliked her school, her town, and how everyone in both areas were just shitty people. She would instruct them to surround the school, show up directly after the first bell and be ready to fight. They would go into a frenzy in order for their queen to be set free. If anyone even dared to step up, well the local hospital would be dealing with bodies on top of bodies. But see in 2019, the reality is if she actually said it word for word, they would drop their normal lives to do just that. That’s how much they loved and worshiped her. A mirroring of modern fandoms in today’s pop culture society. Whether the celebrity asks them to or not regardless of the high limit, the modern day fan wouldn’t think twice. Well some would due to common sense. However in some cases, it only depends if the fandom knows what their “leader” looks like or who they were outside of the internet. But then there is Kat’s situation. After that Mckay party video came out, her followers did see what she looked like. Yet, despite everything, they sill love and adored her regardless. Not only did her fans love and adored her more, they wanted to fuck her to the point of no return. We then see Kat in a bra, shorts and a mask to hide half of her face. She begins her live cam by twerking.

Cut to, Rue, now at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Honestly, after that whole shit that went down the last episode of almost getting raped while under the usage of Fentanyl courtesy of sleazy supplier Mouse, I would’ve highly hoped that after that point, she would just stop. 60 days she has and hasn’t been clean. The morning after that situation and basically for disappearing for 16 hours, she obviously got in trouble with her mom. Gone for a long time? Her mom had every reason to worry especially if Rue told the truth. Even though she didn’t and voluntarily took another drug test. However, the lady boss wasn’t the only one angry with Rue. Well more on the lines of more than just angry. With Fezco contacting Jules at the end of the last episode, understandably she wasn’t okay with what she was told. She doesn’t want to be best friends with someone who is especially trying end their life in the most toxic inducing way possible. Jules basically gives her a slight ultimatum; Drugs or their friendship. Rue, not wanting to let go of the one good thing in her life at the moment besides her own family, promises to Jules that her drug usage will disconnect from her. Of course to then pass her mom’s drug test, Rue asks Jules to pee for her so she can falsely pass another drug test. But to sum it up, Rue has been trying. At this point she’s disappointed a lot of people and she doesn’t want to anymore. She owes it to her loved ones to stay clean but she also owes it to herself.

Now aside from Kat and her online fame, there was another in the main character bunch that tackled a different side of the Internet. The topic of online love and online relationships. Without the stepping in of Nev Schulman and a mystery co-host of course. It was Jules and ShyGuy118. Also known as Tyler but unbeknown to Jules, it was actually Nate. She was falling in love with him. In side by side shot scenes we see the two text each other. Filling their might’s with “sweet dreams” and their days of knowing each other and what their futures hold for one another. Rue and Maddy, have caught the two texting and being heavily occupied. Nate texts her and says “I wish I could see you”. All the while giving a serious glance at Jules from across the classroom while her face is buried in her phone. Can it be actually arranged? Only if she’s prepared for the outcome. She claims to be not in love. Much like all teenagers do. She just triple three times likes him. I mean, just like Rue’s comment, Jules might actually be dealing with a fuckboy. No matter the sweetness she receives from him. She claims that Rue is jealous but yet, Jules has been acting weird the entire week. Rue has been acting weird too by just doing the old wait game while Jules is texting Tyler “Nate”, on her phone. If they do meet up, lord only knows what hill this will tumble to.

Kat watches her masquerade twerking video that she uploaded to Pornhub. So far it only contains 81 views and only one like. I mean it’s only her first video. She’s disappointed by this but then looks at her messages and sees two from a guy named Johnny_unite_usa who is automatically obsessed with Kat and has a bit of a foot fetish with wanting to see her feet. Her mom stops by to tell her that dinner is ready and she sees Kat filming her toes. She gave into Johnny’s request.

Nate is still talking to Jules while in a whole ass relationship with Maddy. She starts to talk about her parents and how her mom dislikes her father to the point of no return. This may quite be a parallel with Jules but I’m gonna try to not over think it. Parents tend to run their course about the relationship they share with each other. I personally think they should keep the tension in between there and not put it on their child. It’s just not right for their mental health. Nate who is obviously in outer space with his mind says that Maddy should tell her mom she doesn’t want to be involved in the situation. Maddy tries to say in full that if she says that to her mother, she’ll hate Maddy too but she is getting distracted by the repeated buzzing from Nate’s phone due to texts from Jules. Who she doesn’t know about. Nate lies and says that it’s his father and Maddy offers to respond and text him off but Nate declines and the two end up in the car in silence.

In the cafeteria, Jules passes her phone to Rue to show the dick pic that Nate, sent her and just like a common sense kicker, Rue still doesn’t approve. Mostly because the dick doesn’t seem as big as Jules is trying to make it be. Arguing that there really is no way to tell if it’s big due to a lack of measuring from a hand or a random object. It’s probably just from the dirty side of Google.

We cut back to the cafeteria after Rue’s educational cutaway scene to find out that Nate’s penis is the size of an Evian bottle. The lighting is nice, his room is nice and tidy, and his grooming is okay. Personally I’m not fond of nude pics in 2019 but hey; they are the new way to the soul. During class, Jules tried to take some partial nudes in the school bathroom but she felt like they weren’t good enough. She asks Rue to stop by her house to help her take more professional partial nudes. Rue agrees much to the dismay of her inner conscience.

Kat buys a grapefruit for lunch since she has put herself on the grapefruit diet. Your stomach shrinks, you adjust, and you are given a rebirth. Well at least that’s what the cafeteria lady named Erika says. The total comes out to $3.25 but Kat tries to convince Erika to let her pay the $2.00 the next day but due to school policy, she can’t do that. After a heckler tells Kat to hurry up, Ethan, at the right time, asks if he can pay for Kat’s lunch which she lets him do. They have an awkward exchange due whether or not Kat should get more food but Erika tells it to his face to not tempt her, she’s on the grapefruit diet. They give an awkward goodbye and go there separate ways.

Cassie is in a long-distance relationship with Mckay due to him being in college. She claims that they are not in love but she is planning to spend the weekend with him. Kat receives a message from Johnny that says her feet video was amazing to him. He wants to skype with her but she doesn’t like the idea of a guy talking to her face to face due to her feet. That is until he offers to pay her $100 through wiring. She then thinks of using bitcoin but she herself doesn’t know how to use it. That is until one of the girls points her in the direction of Ashtray. He basically gives her a rundown about the system. It’s a worldwide cryptocurrency and digital payment system which Kat doesn’t understand. Fezco who is hanging on the side as usual tells Kat to just tell them what she is trying to do and then they can speak on how they can assist her. Unless it’s human trafficking; they heavily along with the good people of the world, don’t like that. She just wants to know if the bitcoin system is anonymous. It is and this works in Kat’s favor.

Back at Jules’ house, Rue is helping her take the partially nude photos for Nate. Despite being uncomfortable with the idea, Rue still tends to what Jules wants to achieve out of this. Good looking pics for Tyler who is Nate. Rue’s mom calls her to ask her where she is and what time she’ll be home. She says due to NA, she’ll be home at 9:30. After the call, Rue informs Jules that she had been clean for two weeks. This excites Jules as she topples Rue over and plants little kisses on her face as a sign that she was thrilled Rue was cleaning her act. Rue excuses herself to get a glass of water downstairs. There from across the fridge, she sees a bunch of pills. Lord can only hope she didn’t take one even after picking up a pill bottle. She heads back to Jules’ room and suddenly says that she has to leave. While leaving her house we see Rue pull out a pill from her pocket and pop one right into her mouth. She rides home on her bike and she stops at a neon cross. The next part may actually be 60 days later since we see Rue back at NA. She finishes the speech from the beginning of the episode and while that’s happening we see the camera pan on an NA member listening closely to Rue’s story. She finishes telling it and the meeting ends a few minutes later. That same NA member is outside taking a smoke break and he starts talking to Rue about her story. About her close to fatal overdose. As he starts to read the story and Rue more, you can just hear reality kick in a bit.

“That’s some heavy shit. But, hey, We’ve all done some bad shit in our lives, right? Comes with the territory. But, man, now you just got me thinking about…what that does to a 13-year-old, a 13-year-old kid, who finds her big sister overdosed. What that moment must do to somebody…how it affects the rest of their lives, you know, how it affects their ability to trust. Leaves it hard for them to get close to people, you know, relationships. Makes it hard for them to fall in love. Living with the fear that at any moment, the rug can be ripped out from under them, and they lose everything. Especially the people they love. You ever think about that? Yeah, probably fucked up for life. But, hey, you’re gonna have to make peace with that. Just like you’re gonna have to make peace with the fact that you could be responsible for some shit like that, and then get up in front of a whole group of people who are struggling with the same issues and lie about being clean. You know what i’m saying? Listen, young blood. You’re playing pool with Minnesota Fats. The greatest motherfucking pool player that ever lived. I’m Ali. Let me know when you want to stop trying to kill yourself and eat some pancakes.”

This dude…out of everyone who knows Rue personally, can actually tell that Rue hasn’t been truthful about staying clean. His entire dialogue basically reminds me of my one of my online friends who, ironically is named Ali too. I have no doubt he would say something like that if he was in the same position as Euphoria’s Ali. You can hit rock bottom with addiction but what is important is that you never lose your wisdom. That’s why I’m instantly on this Ali’s side because everything he said to Rue, just had to be said. Girl at this point is looking for a death wish with her addiction. He genuinely doesn’t want her to slip out of this life permanently and I hope she takes that chance. Rue returns home and is in deep thought with Ali’s words as she plops on Gia’s bed to watch My So-Called Life and remind her to never find a Jordan Catalano. No matter how cute he may be, he ain’t worth it.

Johnny writes Kat and says that she’ll skype her in 5 minutes which freaks her out to oblivion. She rummages around her room to make sure that nothing can be traced back to her family or to her actual identity. The skype starts and it’s as creepy as you can expect. An old guy probably in his close to early 40’s. Hanes tank top t-shirt with a bad haircut. An older nerd who has watched Kat’s video a lot and thinks she is one of the most beautiful creatures he’s ever seen. Well he’s not wrong with that but I certainly think she’s beautiful too. Johnny implies that he’s an odd man that has kinks near and far. To prove that he takes off his underpants and reveals his small penis. Kat tries to tell him in a nice way that it’s not small while still laughing. He then starts to jerk off and begs Kat to shame him for his weight. To say he’ll never have sex with her. How small his dick is. She understands this to the point of where she tells him not to cum. He would do anything that Kat tells him to do because of her beauty, her power, her body shape and he just wants her to take complete control of her. He wants to be her cash pig and quite frankly, I feel as though this is out of her hands at this point. This guy is on another level of freaky.At first she didn’t believe a word he said until he messaged her three days later. He apparently lost control, which disappoints her and he immediately sends her $100 dollars in bitcoin.

Simultaneously, Cassie is getting ready for her weekend with Mckay. Her mom pops in and gives her a warning with a drink in her hand saying to not get pregnant. Giving her warnings and reminders to keep her phone near her. Send her a photo as soon as she is in Mckay’s dorm. Sounds more like a ransom photo set up but Cassie agrees to her mother’s wishes. Cassie leaves as BB and Maddy make crude gestures behind their mom. While her mom also warns Mckay to behave himself and don’t get Cassie pregnant.

We then see that Nate is trying to do that very thing to Maddy as he is doggy-styling her. All the while she is slightly distracted by him getting more texts on her phone. They finish and he hits the shower. While doing so she finally goes through his phone and sees that he has pictures of his dick in his phone album. She lies and says that her mom called her and she has to leave. Maddy leaves and from the camera panning below Nate in the show, the water takes us to our next destination.

It’s a college party that Mckay and Jules are located at and it’s exactly your modern aged college party. Heavy drinking and phones out as far as thee I can see. Mckay’s initiation is taking place; he’s nervous but Cassie reassures him that he will be fine. The music cuts and it’s one of the seniors who instruct all of the pledges to stand up up against the wall for their initiation rituals. The first one is drinking a full can of alcohol. Last one has to strip naked. Mckay drinks it in time and some other poor sap ends up getting stripped naked. The next and i’m assuming the last one is to drink an alcohol that has a goldfish inside it. Mckay hesitated at first until Cassie stepped up an took a fish shot with him. Much to the delight of everyone else while dubbing her as the baddest bitch. I mean, did he lie cause he wasn’t lying. For the rest of the night Cassie and Mckay dance the night away and they end up having sex in a nearby bathroom on the sink.

Miss Rue texts Jules to see what she is up to. Sending her multiple texts and being more than just bored. Rue ends up pulling another pill from her sock that she took from Jule’s house and plops it into her mouth to calm her nerves. She just wants to speak to her only friend and of course she knocks out. Hours later, Jules herself informs her that she was talking to Tyler. That is why she wasn’t answering.

We then see Kat meet up with Ashtray to show how much she has received in Bitcoin. So far she has $200. In real cash he ends up giving her $160 due to %20 banking fee. I mean this kid wasn’t lying about that either. Even though I wish he was because those tiny fees are still trash. Yet, that’s just my opinion.

Maddy and Kat are both at the mall and she asks Kat if some people can be either %100 percent straight and %100 percent gay. Kay then explains to her the overview of the extended LGBTQA community; making a case in point that sexuality is basically a spectrum. She then asks if straight guys might watch gay porn. Not unless if they were a hundred percent straight. Maddy is annoyed and Kat catches on into thinking that this might have something to do with Nate. Maddy claims that her questions are not about any guys that she knows of. Then Maddy proceeds to secretly tell Kat what she found on Nate’s phone.

Mckay brings Cassie home after their wild weekend. They give a sweet send off to each other and she heads to her front door.

Kat ends up in a store to buy some new things with the money she received from Johnny. She goes into the dressing room and tries the first outfit on. She then asks the only worker in the store to judge her on the first outfit she put on. What happens next is basically a nerdy young adult female’s dream with Kat pulling the guy in the dressing room and then proceeding to catch another dick. Through the bouncing and moans, one can only hope that it’s not a dream. That is until the guy snaps her out of her daydream and reminds her that he is about to close up shop. He ends up asking her if she lives around the area and she proceeds to say no. He agrees and says the area is horrible and then proceeds to ring her up. She is back in her room and to the tune of DMX’s X gon give it to ya, Kat switches up her look and ends up appearing at school in a punk-rock bad girl type of look. Much to the surprise of some people looking on. She changed and it extremely shows.

We see Rue lying on the grass in deep thought after school. Jules catches up to her and informs her that after the seemingly nude pics that she had Rue help her make, Tyler wants to meet his lady love in person. He wants to meet her at the up coming carnival that is happening at a nearby lake at night. If only this girl knew she was on some catfish type of shit with this situation. Rue tries to talk through the matter by asking why not in public. Jules counteracts by saying he’s a jock, his mother is the conservative type. The in public situation just wouldn’t be on the nose for him. Rue informs heavily that it’s a dangerous situation to be in. Jules has no clue on what she is walking into and the possibility of Nate doing something horrible to her because he’s himself, well I don’t want to put that in my own head but it could happen. Rue just wants Jules to be safe about all of this but of course Jules isn’t focused with her safety and she proceeds to leave after being disappointed in Rue’s reaction. Now Rue just can’t get the situation out of her head. Getting distracted in class and then a little later, appearing at Jules’ house wanting to express her fears. In a nervous sweat, Rue goes on in full to say that she doesn’t want anything terrible to happen to Jules. She just wants her to be happy at the same time too. She’s the best thing that has happened to Rue in a long time and Rue doesn’t want that taken away from her. Jules runs up to Rue and apologizes for not understanding Rue’s concerns. In the mess of the state that she is in, after they stare at each other for a minute, much unexpected to Jules, Rue kisses her. This causes Rue to be even more anxious and she proceeds to leave Jules’ room and her house.

We see Fezco run down the stairs as his doorbell is rung repeatedly. Turns out the person doing it is Rue. She wants a few OCs but obviously after the incident, Fezco is not gonna do that. She tries to argue that her day has been really shitty but that isn’t really a great way to create an excuse as to what happened in the previous episode. He tells her that for her safety, she can’t get any drugs from him anymore or show up to his house anymore. What happens next, I wouldn’t even say this to my worst enemy.

“Fez! You’re full of shit, man. You make your living off of selling drugs to teenagers. Now all of a sudden, you want to have a fucking moral high ground? You’re a fucking dropout drug dealer. You know that? You’re a fucking drug dealer with seven functioning fucking brain cells. Open the door! Fuck you! Fuck you, Fez. Okay? Are you doing this because you care about me? If you gave a shit about me, you wouldn’t have sold me the fucking drugs in the first place! But you did! You fucking did! So open the goddamned door! Open the door! Open the door! Open the door. You did this to me! You fucking…you did this to me, Fez. You fucking ruined my life! The least you could do is open the goddamned door and fix it! I’m fucking serious. I’m so fucking serious. If you don’t open this door right now, I swear to God, I will hate you till the day I fucking die.”

You can just hear his heart breaking over her screaming. He silently says he’s sorry over and over as he leaves Rue to let her anger out on the metal door. Hours later while the sun is still setting, Rue finally calls Ali after some heavy thinking and see if he still wanted to get those pancakes that he was talking about.

After watching that scene, and seeing the theories online float around, I’m not gonna sit on my bed while typing this and not agree that in a way, Angus Cloud, who plays Fezco, is in a way suppose to be a young Mac Miller with in the world of Euphoria. His character is almost like the adaption of the late rapper who passed away in September of last year. Mac wanted to get people to stop doing drugs and to find a better way through this life. Was it intentional for Angus to portray Fezco the way he does? Probably. Is this theory brought together by the fans in anyway correct? It could be. Yet, it just breaks your heart a little more but also makes it hurt less in a weird way. Although Malcolm is gone, he is still making an impact in some shape or form. If this is another form, I love it. I hope it stays like that.
